There is yet another feather in the cap of the Republican Party, or rather the Trump Party. Now the leading candidate to be the Republican presidential nominee to face off against Biden in the 2024 election is going to be facing a jury soon in the first ever criminal trial of a current or former president. Members of the Party must be bursting with pride at establishing yet another first. The only thing that will top this is if he is ultimately convicted and still becomes the Republican’s choice to top the ticket. Never before in the history of the country has there been a convicted felon running for president. Way to go Republicans!! Lincoln must be spinning uncontrollably in his grave.
The trial itself will likely not be televised but I truly wish it were. It would be a spectacle like nothing we’ve ever seen before. Just picture it – Trump sitting at the defense table while porn star, Stormy Daniels, is on the witness stand talking about the affair she said she had with Trump. If that is not a made for television moment, I don’t know what is. Perhaps they will also call Karen McDougal, the former Playboy playmate, who has also testified she had affair with Trump. (I wonder if Melania will be amused by this circus?)
The real question is, “Will Trump be able to just sit there and keep his mouth shut? Or will the judge have to admonish him and ultimately threaten him to stop whatever courtroom antics he engages in?” This will be excruciating for Trump. He will have absolutely no control over anything. He will just have to sit there and squirm. That alone would be worth the price of admission.
Then, of course, we will likely see Michael Cohen, Trump’s former fixer and attorney, testify. Trump’s legal team will work very hard to discredit him because of previous testimony in which he admitted lying to Congress during their investigation. However, the DA appears to have documents to bolster their case about falsifying records to cover up the hush money payments. It’s a lot easier to discredit witnesses than it is to discredit documents. If the DA has sufficient documentary evidence, that could put the final nail in Trump’s first legal coffin.
The rest of the world must be looking on with complete bewilderment and asking themselves, “How the hell did the United States of America get into this mess and suffer such a loss of world prestige?” The answer is quite simple – Donald J. Trump, soon to be the only former president to go on trial for felony criminal activity. He is nothing short of a one-man wrecking ball. He has left behind a wake of failed businesses, convicted felons, disbarred attorneys, spineless sycophants, bankruptcies, unpaid contractors, childish insults, and a severely divided electorate.
