There have been stories in the news recently about town hall meetings conducted by various Republicans which have been met with much vocal backlash against the policies being implemented by the Trump/Musk regime. The apparent solution to this ‘problem’ was for the Republican Party to suggest their members stop having town hall meetings and/or seed the audience with only supporters. This shows just how cowardly the Republican Party has become and how they are hell bent on pushing through policies and an agenda that is deeply unpopular. Then again, no doubt they are convinced they no longer need to listen to disenchanted constituents because the military, the DOJ and the FCC are being shaped into tools that will be wielded to root out and stifle dissent. Couple that with the ongoing assault on voting rights and blatant gerrymandering and I’m sure many Republicans are feeling particularly invincible these days regardless of what they do and what policies they support.
It has been clear for a long time that Republicans, particularly MAGA Republicans understand the policies they push are not widely popular. Common sense tells you that if their policies were widely popular, they would be doing everything in their power to expand voting rights and make it easier for people to vote. The fact that they are doing the exact opposite across almost every state in the Union should tell everyone all they need to know. They all know that ‘widespread’ voter fraud is not a real thing. They all know that it is already illegal for non-citizens to vote, and it happens very, very rarely. They already know elections in this country are amongst the safest in the world. And yet they continue to espouse the falsehood that they must pass the various laws regarding voting rights and voter access to ensure the integrity of the system. It is utter nonsense. They are doing it for one simple reason – to restrict the voting of those portions of the population that disagree with the policies they are pushing.
Pam Bondi, Trump’s loyal pick for Attorney General, disbanded the section of the DOJ that was looking into foreign election interference despite the overwhelming body of evidence that foreign governments have in the past and are continuing to try to interfere with and influence elections in the United States. One can only assume that she is counting on that foreign influence to help get Republicans elected in the mid-term elections in 2026 and perhaps help the Republican nominee for president get elected in 2028. There is absolutely no other reason to do this. If you know there are crimes being committed and you disband the group that is investigating those crimes, one can only assume you want those crimes to continue.
What would people think if Bondi and Kash Patel (the Trump sycophant now in charge of the FBI) suddenly decided to no longer investigate organized crime or drug cartels? People would be outraged of course. However, it has become clear that the DOJ and the FBI will stand idly by while foreign actors work to influence elections in this country, most notably to the benefit of Trump and his MAGA toadies.
What will happen in the 2026 mid-term elections? Given the rising discontent of the population and the razor thin majority the Republicans have in the House and the Senate, one would think the Democrats have a reasonable chance of flipping both Houses to at least put some checks and balances to King Trump back in place. However, when you factor in Musk’s financial cudgel, the fact that the DOJ is likely to just stand idly by and let foreign governments interfere in the elections at will, and the plethora of voter suppression laws and gerrymandering put in place by Republicans, it is really anyone’s guess.
This country has never had to worry about ‘widespread’ voter fraud, but we certainly need to be worried about election interference. That could very well be the death knell for democracy in America.
