The lawlessness and hypocrisy of the Trump administration is beyond anything ever experienced in our nation’s history. Trump and his minions claim they have no power to return Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who, by their own admission, was mistakenly deported to El Salvador where he is now in the infamous CECOT prison. They continue to defy an order from a federal court to return him to the United States. They claim they are powerless to do so because he is now outside their jurisdiction.

This is the same ‘powerless’ administration that is using the economic power of the United States to impose tariffs on almost every country in the world to force them to comply with the wishes of the Trump administration. This is the same ‘powerless’ administration that has threatened to use force to take over the Panama Canal and Greenland. This is the same ‘powerless’ administration that is using the power of federal dollars to try to get universities and law firms to bend to their will. And yet, they are telling the US Supreme Court they are powerless to force the tiny country of El Salvador to return one person. It’s just an excuse to circumvent the courts and the rule of law.

Everyone’s favorite Representative, Majorie Taylor Greene, apparently made some stock trades which just happen to coincide with Trump’s remarks about tariffs that sent the markets on a wild roller coaster ride. She is the only one we know about but there are likely others who profited handsomely with some insider knowledge.  Insider trading is a crime. Will there be any investigations? It is unlikely and if there are, Pam Bondi will probably kill them before they uncover the extent of any illegal trading. After all, we have a convicted felon as a President, so what’s a little insider trading amongst friends. The rule of law doesn’t really apply to helping your friends – right?

And what about ‘SignalGate’ where we had the top officials in the defense and intelligence community discussing classified information using a commercial app that was not approved for such discussions AND the texts were set to auto delete in violation of the law which requires that government records be maintained. These people knew what they were doing was wrong and against the law and they did it anyway. They did it to expressly circumvent the law requiring the preservation of government records. There is no other plausible explanation. It is highly likely this wasn’t the first of these illegal chats and I would be willing to bet money the practice is still going on. The whole attitude is, “Laws? Who cares?”  People should be fired but that clearly won’t happen.

In Trump world, ‘the rule of law’ is really ‘the rule of Trump,’ i.e., the law is whatever Trump says it is. And despite Pam Bondi’s oath to uphold the Constitution, her interpretation of the Constitution is whatever Trump tells her it is. We have a Supreme Court and a Congress who are supposed to provide checks and balances in our democracy, but they are becoming more and more irrelevant. Trump and Vance are openly defying the U.S. Supreme Court and the Republican majority in both houses of Congress are more interested in licking Trump’s boots than protecting our democracy. Thus, we have an administration that is becoming more lawless each and every day. And the longer it is allowed to go on, the harder it will be to rein it in.

The Rule of Law – what a quaint concept!
