I rarely agree with anything Trump says or does, however, I agree with him that we should redraw the border between the U.S. and Canada. We may have different ideas about how to redraw the border, but I agree it should be redrawn. Hear me out!
Trump continues to talk about annexing Canada as the 51st state and redrawing the border between the U.S. and Canada. This has obviously angered most Canadians and embarrassed many Americans. However, I have a solution, although its probably not the one that Trump and his toady circus want. That said, it would solve a lot of the divisiveness that is currently plaguing the United States. It would also solve the problems caused by the archaic Electoral College that gives middle America unreasonable power in elections.
Virtually all the states in the Northeast tend to be blue states and vote more Democratic. The West Coast states, California, Oregon, and Washington also tend to vote more Democratic and are considered blue states. Rather than the United States in its current configuration annexing Canada, why don’t the blue states in the Northeast and the West coast secede and join Canada?
The United States is already divided. The Midwest states and the Southern states are considered red states and voted overwhelmingly for Trump. They seem to resonate with his draconian policies against immigrants, abortion, same sex marriage, and foreign policy. The blue states, on the other hand, seem to be more aligned with Canadian policies with respect to healthcare, abortion, education, tolerance, gun laws and foreign policy. So, let’s just admit the obvious and agree the country seems philosophically divided and there seems little hope that will change any time soon. Rather than fighting, we can just fix it.
The population of New England is about 15 million and the population of the West Coast is about 50 million. The population of the United States is about 340 million so they would still be left with a population of 275 million whereas the population of Canada would grow from 40 million to 105 million.
This would, of course, be a massive undertaking but it is not unprecedented and is certainly no less a daunting task than if the United States were to annex Canada. It’s just that but in reverse. The border states like Michigan and Wisconsin could vote for which country they wanted to be a part of.
Many people would view this proposal as ridiculous and I would simply ask, “Why is this any more ridiculous than the U.S. annexing Canada?” In fact, it makes way more sense. The Trump MAGA policies are diametrically opposed to the policies in Canada so like I posted before, there is absolutely no upside for Canada to join the United States. It would, however, be mutually beneficial for Canada to absorb the West Coast and New England given the current political climate.
Some will say this would lead to a second civil war in the United States. I would counter that we are already engaged in a civil war albeit a philosophical and political one for now. However, I maintain that this proposal is no less ridiculous than Trump’s threats to annex Canada, Greenland, Panama, parse up Ukraine or turn Gaza into a resort and displace two million Palestinians. I for one, would be more than happy to begin singing “O Canada” if it would lead to not having to live under the draconian MAGA dictatorship that is taking root in this country.
So, I agree with Trump – let’s redraw the border between the U.S. and Canada. How soon can we start?
