Trump: The Faustian Bargain

The latest Hitler-esque comments by Trump about immigrants poisoning the blood of the country have just once again reaffirmed the belief of many that Trump is a truly evil man. His former White House Chief of Staff, Marine Gen. John Kelly, has called Trump the most flawed person he has ever known. He said, “The depths of his dishonesty is just astounding to me.” General Kelly is just one of many people who have worked closely with Trump and have reached a very similar conclusion.

I just can’t help but find some sad irony in the fact that Trump, who some believe is the embodiment of evil, has become the standard bearer for so many evangelical Christians and Christian nationalists like our religious zealot Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson. I decided to bump Trump up against the Ten Commandments just for fun.

  1. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Trump might think he’s a god but that’s all I’ll say here.

  • Thou shalt not make idols nor worship them (paraphrased).

Given that some of Trump’s ardent supporters seem to worship him in an almost cultlike fashion, one could argue these people are violating this commandment. Certainly, Trump, who thrives on adulation wouldn’t see anything wrong with people bowing before him.

  • Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord in vain.

It is an indisputable fact that Trump swears like a drunken sailor and has a temper to match. I guess the evangelicals must not think this applies to Trump.

  • Remember the Sabbath and keep in holy.

Trump obviously gets a pass on this one too given his campaign rally schedule and tirades on social media that hit seven days a week.

  • Honor thy father and mother.

Given that Donald got something like $400 million from his father, Fred Trump, he probably honors them a little bit.

  • Thou shalt not kill.

As far as we know, Trump has not personally killed anyone. However, one could argue he has been the cause of other people killing people. (Does Jan. 6th come to mind?)  He openly advocates violence and promotes hate and bigotry.

  • Thou shalt not commit adultery.

I don’t even need to say anything. This is an open and shut case! He is a serial adulterer. Just talk to his ex-wives and mistresses.

  • Thou shalt not steal.

Once again, there isn’t much that needs to be said. He has already been convicted of fraud in New York. He essentially stole money from students at Trump University which was shut down for its fraudulent practices. He has grifted millions of dollars from his supporters.

  • Thou shalt not bear false witness against your neighbor. (Don’t lie!)

It would be a waste of ink to say too much. It is a well-documented fact that Trump is a serial and compulsive liar.

  1.  Thou shalt not covet they neighbors house, his wife, etc.

Trump covets everything – money, power, fame!

All of us are sinners. That is a given. However, how does a man who violates so many tenets of Christianity so deeply, so frequently and so publicly, become the standard bearer for the evangelical Christians? It’s like Satan himself being the Pied Piper to a whole parade of pious, religious zealots and they are so caught up in their religious fervor they can’t see the evil right in front of them.

Even worse, these zealots want to force all their restrictive, Christian beliefs on the entire population while giving their ostensible leader a complete pass because they believe the end justifies the means. Talk about making a Faustian bargain! The hypocrisy is mind blowing.
