George Orwell must be shouting from his grave, “I told you so!” Now Trump wants to institute the ‘Board of Peace’ and has invited a number of nations to join and, of course, he will be the head of this new organization. This is no doubt in response to the United Nations being unwilling to go along with Trump’s ongoing criminal activities and threats around the world.
First, the ‘Board of Peace’ is a joke right out of the blocks. Trump launched attacks against alleged drug smuggling boats in Venezuela that violated both international and military law. He launched an attack on Venezuela itself, kidnapped its leader (as corrupt as he was), killed a number of Cubans and Venezuelans in the process, and whisked Nicholas Maduro back to the US to stand trial. He is responsible for the bombing of Iran and is currently threatening further action in light of the protests against the government there.
He essentially gave the green light to the genocide committed by Benjamin Netanyahu in Gaza. He is threatening our allies if they won’t accede to his demands to buy Greenland and has said that he will not rule out military action to take it by force. He unleashed bombs on parts of Nigeria under the pretext that the people were killing Christians.
This does not even include the virtual war he has mounted against citizens of his own country. He has used every excuse in the book to be able to send what are eerily like Hitler’s brown shirts into Democratic led cities to essentially wage war. He is now threatening to invoke the Insurrection Act to be able to send in actual U.S. military units. In addition to the bullets and tear gas, he has mounted an all-out economic war on Democratic states – slashing programs and withholding funds.
“Board of Peace” my butt!! This is just an attempt to provide an air of legitimacy for Trump’s authoritarianism, imperialism and global extortion and corruption. George Orwell would be very proud.
Trump has already renamed the former nonprofit U.S. Institute of Peace the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace with the State Department stating that it was done to “reflect the greatest dealmaker in our nation’s history.” This is the same dealmaker who filed for bankruptcy six times, was impeached twice, is a convicted felon and was found liable for sexual assault. This is Orwellian gaslighting on steroids.
It is probably not too much of a stretch to imagine that the newly constituted Board of Peace will implement its own version of the Nobel Peace Prize except it will be named the Trump Peace Prize and the first recipient will be – you guessed it! – Donald Trump himself, with Vladimir Putin to follow shortly thereafter.
Orwell’s book, 1984, was published in 1949. Here we are in 2026, 77 years later, and the United States of America is more like Orwell’s fictitious totalitarian state, Oceania, than most of us ever thought possible.
